about

Silo is the fourth album in the Dronewomb group improvisation series but this time we couldn't be in the same room together. After scant thought on the matter I decided that that would not make a huge difference to our collective sound and began composing The Silo Songbook, a small suite of sparse charts to guide our isolated improvisations. Here follows an excerpt from the instructions I gave my stupendous collaborators:

"Misleadingly-titled, The Silo Songbook is an attempt at devising new ways of achieving the same or similar aesthetic as established in previous Dronewomb sessions without us having to be in the same place. It is fortunate that a lot of the same strategies I’ve applied in-person translate exceptionally well to this situation where we will be recording separately in both time (most likely) and space (definitely). I’m sure you’ve noticed that many of my in-person instructions often preclude or invite certain outcomes from occurring (eg. preclude a uniform pulse or key, and invite rhythmic phasing and dissonance) so I think our forced separation will only enhance these aspects of the group sound. All pieces in The Silo Songbook (except the title work, Silo) are designed so that we each record our parts separately and, afterwards, I will simply overlay them. This may or may not pan out as I intend, but we will soon see. The exception, Silo, is slightly more involved logistically (meaning: multiple file transfers required) and puts more onus onto the performer. For pieces that do not
come together in a pleasing way, I may or may not brutally edit and manipulate them to the extent that they become a new piece. It is likely that I will add cassette loops to these pieces as well but, if so, I will use material sourced from within this project."

I ended up using Reaper plugins instead of cassette loops (mostly).

In hindsight, a reference pitch would have been a sensible idea but, seeing as we didn't have one and three out of the four instruments are fretless, I am all the more pleased with the outcome.
