Neika was recorded live in a lounge room at approximately 11am on Wednesday 26th February 2020 with a handheld stereo recorder. This session was organised, with a large degree of serendipity, to include Emily Wolfe on her brief visit to Melbourne from Tasmania as she toured with Black Swans Of Trespass. Emily and I met each other while playing in a folk rock band in Hobart circa 2009, I think. Emily and Rosie had not met before this session.
The first three tracks are the trio improvising, sometimes accompanied by two portable cassette recorders playing cassette loops, sometimes following rules or playing games, and sometimes simply playing freely. The fourth track, [erratum], is so-named as it is the only track out of all Dronewomb releases to-date to not be either a guitar feedback piece or a group improvisation. It is essentially a sound collage constructed in Reaper solely from recordings I made of Emily back in April 2012 immediately prior to my departure from Tasmania.
During each of the three improvised tracks you can hear musicians shifting in their seat, guitar pedal switches, and even laughter. These noises are welcomed and provide the very few percussive sounds on the album.
