about

Holmeslessness is improvised drone music using four electric guitars constantly feeding back at the lowest possible volume. Using a handheld stereo recorder, I moved through the room to discover and explore beams of sound. This movement is crucial and is, effectively, how I am able to "compose" and "mix" the music in an improvised way (though I will infrequently alter the position of the guitars to change the pitch also). Through movement, the focus can be directed to highlight beating, consonance/dissonance, microtones, standing waves, and other acoustic phenomena. This cannot be done if the microphone/s are fixed in position. Similarly, many of these interesting effects are nullified when listening on a single speaker. A system with two speakers far apart or headphones are best.

Holmeslessness was recorded on 6th October 2017 at home which was, at that time, on Holmes Street in Brunswick East. The street is only a few metres from the front door and is very busy with four lanes of traffic, tram stop in close proximity, and busy takeaway restaurant just across the road. Naturally, much of the outside noise came right through the window and into the recording. These extraneous intrusions are treated in much the same way as I might a strange but friendly cat that approaches me on the street. Its presence is never shunned, sometimes welcomed, but I won't encourage it by opening the window or feeding it.

It is my hope that people can enjoy this album in a meditative context as I do. Set at the correct volume for yourself, it shouldn't take too long to forget that this is a "guitar noise" album and allow the extended chaotic sounds to become a minimal, pulsing music of a contemplative and gentle character.
