about

Anoint was recorded live in a lounge room at 10am on Saturday 22nd February 2020 with a handheld stereo recorder. It is three people improvising accompanied by two portable cassette recorders playing cassette loops. The only goal was to produce music that was hypnotic and immersive and we talked about phasing, drones, the role of chance, and improvisation. No keys or scales or tempi were discussed so each piece was begun by listening to the cassette loops for a brief period and then someone would take the initiative to start playing something. Each piece was ended whenever we all stopped. This is how Lament was created.

Peasant was created by following these instructions: pick three pitches and play them in a short-short-long rhythmic pattern at a tempo different to each other, after a while experiment with tempo and dynamics but keep repeating your phrase, after that we should aim to eventually reach rhythmic unison, at that point we should introduce new pitches but maintain the rhythmic unison, and finally, this will continue until the final chord is cued. The final chord in this particular recording is strikingly consonant compared to the rest of the album and was entirely a product of chance.

During each improvisation you can hear musicians shifting in their seat, guitar pedal switches, and other accidentally captured sounds. These noises are welcomed and provide most of the very few percussive sounds on the album.
